Serotonin and Antiserotonins
نویسنده
چکیده
Serotonin, a smooth-muscle constrictor, has been suggested as possibly important in the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension. The benzyl analog of serotonin (BAS) was developed as an antimetabolite of serotonin, and has certain demonstrable antiserotonin effects in man. Orally it has mode.ate antihypertensive and other clinical effects resembling those of reserpine, which also has a definite antiserotonin action. However, there is question whether the clinical effects of oral BAS or of reserpine in hypertension are due to "antiserotonin" or other pharmacologic actions. BAS is clinically useful in the therapy of some patients with essential hypertension.

Serotonin and Antiserotonins
Serotonin, (5 hydroxy-tryptamine), a naturally occurring compound, is pharmacologically active on intravenous injection in man. It consistently increases the pulse rate but has a variable pressor depressor, or biphasic effect on the arterial pressure. The mode of action of serotonin on these functions is not clear. Serotonin consistently and characteristically increases ventilation. However, it...

Serotonin (5-hydroxytriptamine), one of the most important neurotransmitters, is synthesized from amino acid L-tryptophan in some neurons located in the central nervous system and intestine enterochromaffin cells . The role of this neurotransmitter is important and involves control of sexual behaviors, morality, sleep, pain, appetite, aggression, cardiovascular function and regulation of gut fu...
متن کاملRegulation of Appetite: Role of Serotonin and Hypothalamus
Serotonin (5-HT), a mono-aminergic neurotransmitter is biochemically derived from tryptophan and is mainly found in gastrointestinal tract, platelets and central nervous system of animals. Serotonin (5-HT) in coordination with hypothalamus plays an important role in the CNS control of appetite, eating behavior, and energy balance and body weight. It has a special role in control of carbohydrate...
متن کاملInteraction between Intestinal Microbiota and Serotonin Metabolism
Gut microbiota regulates the production of signaling molecules, such as serotonin or 5-Hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT in the host. Serotonin is a biogenic amine that acts as a neurotransmitter in the gut and brain. There is a perfect interaction between human gastrointestinal microbiota and the serotonin system. The gut microbiota plays an important role in the serotonin signaling pathways through the...

The respiratory tract contains numerous peptides secreted from special pulmonary epithelial cells whichare called endocrine cells. The function of neuroendocrine cells is modulated by amines. Serotonin has strong vasomotor and bronchomotor effects in the airway mucosa. The objective of this study was to determine presence and distribution of serotonin-positive endocrine cells in respiratory tra...
